The disco ball (also commonly called a mirror ball or glitter ball) dates back at least to 1897, when a ballroom dance in Boston used one. They became common in the 1920s and were standard discotheque fixtures by the 1970s. The iconic disco band Pink Floyd's 1994 tour featured a 16-foot (4.9 m) diameter glitter ball, one of the largest in the world. Always looking to outdo the competition, Madonna's 2006 tour used a 2-ton disco ball festooned with $2 million worth of Swarovski crystals.
