More Than You Ever Wanted to Know About Mothers Day
Mother's Day can be traced to an ancient Greek custom of mother worship honoring Cybele, a great mother of Greek gods, around the vernal equinox. Never to be outdone, the ancient Romans added another holiday called Matronalia that was dedicated to Juno, the protector of the Roman state. Mothers were usually given gifts on this day.
Americans celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May. It was imported from Britain by the social activist Julia Ward Howe as an anti-war gesture following the American Civil War. Howe's 1870 Mother's Day Proclamation didn't catch on until other women took up the cause. The first Mother's Day celebrated in the US was on May 10, 1908, in West Virginia. It spread gradually to other states and became a national holiday in 1914. According to the National Restaurant Association, Mother's Day is now the most popular day of the year to dine out at a restaurant in the United States.
