Design Your Own Bird
It's back! After being out of stock for years, Jackite is making Create-a-Birds again.
Disney's Wild Kingdom flew Create-a-Bird kites to mark their 10th anniversary. The Create-a-Bird is the same kite as the Bluejay, Blackbird, and Cardinal kites, but without any printed graphics. Using crayons or magic markers, customize this as any kind of bird you want, or invent something new entirely. What a great idea for a school project, or a rainy-day vacation activity with your kids! Theater companies and churches often use these all-white kites (along with the all-black Blackbird, see the Related Products tab) as stage props, and they add excitement to marching band programs as well. Create-a-Bird is a good substitute for the big Dove of Peace kite if you have a small indoor auditorium.
With its simple three-step preparation, you'll be flying your assembled 28" wingspan (71.1 cm) kite in minutes. Like all of our bird kites, Create-a-Bird is made from Tyvek, a synthetic paper-like material that's both very difficult to tear and water resistant. Tyvek is commonly used for envelopes, car covers, labels, coveralls, and house wrap. Netflix envelopes and disk sleeves are made of Tyvek because it's nearly indestructible and weighs almost nothing.
About the Add-Ons
Poles: The "small birds" might not be useful as scarecrows or decoys, but you can still attach the Create-a-Bird to a pole and fly it permanently as a decorative windsock. Our heavy-duty fiberglass poles might be overkill for these small kites, but we'll cheerfully sell you one if you'd rather not bother shopping for an alternative in your local hardware or sporting goods store. Poles collapse to a 3' (0.91 m) tube and extend to the length indicated. We don't recommend flying small birds any higher than 20'. You're really better off going with a simple wooden dowel if you're going to use your Create-a-Bird indoors as a stage prop. The "platinum" poles have an extra-thin tip for better flexing, and can bend 180 degrees. Other sizes have a thicker, more durable (but less flexible) tip.
Jackite's pole color selection often changes without notice. If the pole that you chose isn't available, we'll substitute the closest color that they have.
Kite orders that include poles require special packaging, so they'll come directly from Jackite rather than from our own warehouse. These orders often take an extra day to process. Poles weigh about 3 pounds (1.36 kg) and will increase your shipping charge substantially.
Ground Stake: This 22" (59 cm) length of PVC pipe is angled on one end for easy insertion into the ground. Put the butt end of your pole into the open top. You can easily make this yourself or add ours for convenience. The stake weighs about a pound (0.45 kg) and will increase your shipping charge.
Line Rig: The Line Rig is the easiest way to attach your kite to any pole. You get two large swivels connected by 7' (2.13 m) of fishing line. Clip one swivel to your kite and the other to your pole and you're ready to fly. You might want to shorten the line if your Create-a-Bird is going to be an indoor stage prop, particularly if you are using a short dowel as a pole.
Your kite should last for a year or more if you take it down in winds exceeding 20 mph (32 kph) and during sustained heavy rains.
