Are you curious...?
Bacon consumption in the US has increased significantly since "bacon mania" began in 2011, hitting an all-time high of $4 billion in 2013. According to a survey by bacon-maker Smithfield, 65% of Americans would support making it our national food. Chicken-fried bacon, bacon explosion, and chocolate-covered bacon are all things, thanks to the internet, and one celebrity chef is hawking a bacon-of-the-month club.
Bacon has always been delicious; in his 1708 satire The Sot-Weed Factor, poet Ebeneezer Cooke complained that virtually all food in the Americas was bacon-infused. So why the upsurge in popularity now? Commentators point to American culture. Conspicuously enjoying bacon in our health-conscious yet obese world is an act of rebellion. It's also kitschy and funny, as our Mr. Bacon ornament demonstrates.
