The Safety Bike
The Classic Bicycle is a moderately challenging Iconx model. It comes on two sheets of metal. Our 1896 Bon Voyage model is virtually indistinguishable from a modern bicycle.
If you think Metal Earth models are just too small, Iconx was made for you. Their larger size can accommodate even more laser-etched detail on 4" x 8" (10.16 x 20.32 cm) metal sheets. Pop out the pieces by hand (or use wire cutters to get especially crisp lines), bend the tabs using needle-nose pliers, and fit them together as shown in the simple pictorial instructions.
Please note that Iconx models have sharp edges and are not suitable for small children. Recommended for ages 14+.
Are you curious...?
Well over 1 billion bicycles have been manufactured since the first one was introduced in 19th century Europe -- that's double the number of automobiles that have ever been made. They were a niche invention until the big-wheeled "penny-farthing" or "ordinary" was replaced by the "safety bicycle" in the 1880s. Making both wheels more or less the same size, lowering the center of gravity, and putting the rider's feet within reach of the ground vastly improved comfort and safety and turned bicycles into practical transportation -- so practical, in fact, that bicycles predominate in many parts of the world.
Since safety bicycles quickly edged out the old penny-farthings, the word "safety" soon fell out of usage, and they simply became bicycles. Although materials and workmanship have improved greatly since then, the basic design has scarcely changed at all.
