Tea is the second-most popular beverage in the world, behind water and ahead of coffee. Camellia sinensis, as the tea shrub is known, probably originated in an area that touches on present-day India, Burma, and China. It was originally a medicinal drink in the Shang Dynasty in China's Yunnan region. People in Sichuan might have been the first to brew it for its pleasurable stimulating effect. Chinese legend says tea was invented in 2737 BC, but the current Chinese word for tea didn't come into use until the 8th century AD, so we're not 100% sure that they weren't drinking other brews (like chicory or smartweed) before then.
