Double-neck electric guitars are pretty common now, but acoustic guitars and lutes with multiple necks go back to the Renaissance. Modern double-neck guitars typically have 12 strings on the left neck and the traditional six strings on the right, although there are a lot of other variations. The idea is to let musicians switch between guitar sounds without actually having to switch guitars. They are as heavy and awkward as they look. Famous musicians who overcame those drawbacks include Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, Steve Howe and Chris Squire of Yes, The Who's Pete Townshend, Mike Rutherford of Genesis, Steve Vai, and Slash from Guns N' Roses.
