Overview
Rescued from the Wild
It's amazing that such beautiful glass was used to package such common household products as Noxema, Vicks VapoRub, and Milk of Magnesia. When the cold cream or salve was used up, this wonderful antique cobalt glass was simply tossed on impromptu dumps in the Pennsylvania woods or in a corner of the family farm. The jeweler rescued broken remains from these refuse piles and hand-cut them to measure 0.5" (1.27 cm) square. They hang on 0.5" sterling hoops. Each pair of earrings comes pierced on a "The Story of the Glass" card that tells what the glass was originally and its estimated age. The earrings include comfort disc earring backs. The back of the card details how the artist reclaimed this antique glass to help the environment and wildlife, while preserving the history of this pretty old glass.
Cobalt is a hard, lustrous, gray metal and a chemical element. Although cobalt-based colors and pigments have been used since ancient times for imparting a deep blue color to glass, glazes, and ceramics, free metallic cobalt doesn't exist in nature and wasn't discovered until 1735. Cobalt has been detected in Egyptian sculpture and Persian jewelry, in the ruins of Pompeii, and in China as early as the Tang dynasty. Cobalt glass ingots were recovered from a shipwreck dating to the 14th century BC.
Each hand-made piece of Bottled Up jewelry contains variations in bubbles, hues, and in the thickness of the glass. All pieces are carefully designed to use no solder or flux, as this process produces chemicals that are harmful to the environment. These variations make each piece a historical one-of-a-kind original. Yours will not match the photograph exactly. If you don't like the piece we sent you, you may exchange it for another color or style within seven days of receipt. No refunds are available on these hand-made items.
