The shamrock is a registered trademark of the Republic of Ireland. (You can trademark a plant? Who knew?) The diminutive of the Irish word for this white clover is "seamarog", which the English spelled "shamrock". The shamrock was traditionally used for its medicinal properties, and has long been thought of as a symbol of good luck -- possibly because the three-leaf pattern represents the Trinity to Irish Christians.
